Car bomb kills, wounds many in northern Iraq

Tal Afar (Iraq), Apr 27: A suicide car bomb killed and wounded dozens of people near the religiously mixed town of Tal Afar in northern Iraq today, police said.

One police source said the attack took place on the road between Tal Afar and the city of Mosul.

Another police source in Mosul said the bombing had targeted an Iraqi army checkpoint.

A nine-week-old US-backed security crackdown in Baghdad has forced insurgents to leave the capital and step up attacks across Iraq, raising overall civilian deaths in the country.
