New Delhi, Apr 27 (UNI) Even though India has over 5.2 million estimated HIV infected persons, only 1,67,078 cases of AIDS have been reported by the state health authorities since 1986 to March 31, 2007.

Minister of State for Health Panabaka Lakshmi made this disclosure in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.

She said the number of government hospitals providing treatment to AIDS patients has increased from eight in 2004 to 127 in 2007 which are planned to be increased to 250 under the National AIDS Control Programme III launched in the eleventh Five Year Plan from April 1, 2007.

Each hospital is provided additional manpower support as per patient load on contract basis for the ART centre where AIDS patients receive treatment. For timely identification of patients requiring ART, CD4 machines have also been provided to ART centres, she informed.

Senior faculty members of the hospital in which ART centre is located as well as doctors and other staff on contract are provided training before the centre starts functioning, she revealed, adding that the training is conducted in specified institutions for 5 to 12 days depending on the category of staff.
