New Delhi, Apr 26 (UNI) New Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra today ordered levying of fines on private firms managing garbage disposal in South and West Delhi for poor upkeep of 'dhalaos'.

A fine of Rs 10,000 each was levied on private firms for poor upkeep of 'dhalaos' in 13 spots in different areas following an extensive tour by the Mayor of South and West Delhi colonies.

These firms were fined because it was found that there were huge piles of garbage at 'dhalaos' emitting bad odour in the area.

Besides imposing fines on the firms, she ordered that the spots be thoroughly cleaned immediately.

Stating that garbage be properly disposed of in all parts of the city, the Mayor directed the Director-in-Chief (Environment Management Services) that it must be ensured that there is no collection of garbage in streets and public places and that the 'dhalaos' are regularly cleaned.

The Mayor said in view of summer, the Councillors as well as the officers should take appropriate measures to prevent the spread of water and vector-borne diseases like gastroenteritis, cholera and malaria. She said the health officers should involve Councillors to motivate RWAs and other concerned groups.

Ms. Mehra impressed upon the need for the Councillors to visit MCD schools and see the delivery of mid-day meal services.

''They should go and share the food with children to ensure that children get good quality cooked food every day as per laid down norms,''she said.

She also asked Councillors to visit the schools and prepare a list where repair is required.
