New fellowship norms for PhD and M Phil

Krishnagar, Apr 26 (UNI) The University Grants Commission (UGC) has proposed new fellowship plans for the unsuccessful NET candidates.

Speaking at the Kalyani University convocation, UGC Professor Sukhdeo Thorat today said, '' Students who did not get through the NET, UGC will provide monthly assistance of Rs 5000 to the candidates who register for PHD and Rs 3000 to those who register for M Phil.'' An increment for the students who were under the present system of assistance was also overdue. ''Successful NET applicants under the present system will receive a 50 per cent hike in their assistance,'' Mr Thorat said.

He further highlighted the need to spread higher education in the remote districts of the state. ''We have identified 300 districts wherein UGC will intensify the infrastuctural support to increase the number of students,'' he added.

Altogether 13,982 candidates have earned a graduate degree in the state in the last three years.

Among the others present in the Convocation ceremony were Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi, Prof C N Rao and Prof Arabinda Kumar Das.
