Jabalpur, Apr 26 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued notices to the Centre and state government on a plea challenging the latter's bestowing on anganwadi workers the entire responsibility of the midday meals provided to schoolchildren.

While hearing the All-India Democratic Women's Association petition yesterday, Chief Justice Anang Kumar Patnaik and Justice Krishna Kumar Lahoti issued notices to Secretary (Social Welfare), Commissioner (Woman and Child Development) and the Centre's Secretary (Woman and Child Development) directing them to reply by May 7.

''The state has about a lakh female anganwadi workers and the shortage is about four lakh. Despite that, the state regime issued the meals-related order on February 26, with the Centre's nod. The workers -- who are also made to toil under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Pulse Polio campiagn, electoral list-related surveys etc -- receive meagre stipends,'' the petititioner said.
