Athens, Apr 26 (UNI) President APJ Abdul Kalam, a scientist in his own right, today called upon foreign policy makers to take into account the qualitative aspects of the situation in laying down their postulates and not rely totally on the mathematical models.

''We can even model precisely the transactional parts between citizens, between armed forces and between nations, using the mathematical models. However, including the aspects such as the unity of minds and other qualitative attributes would be a great challenge for policy makers.'' he said.

Dr Kalam was speaking at Eliamep, the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy, on the topic of the 'Dynamics of Peace and Prosperity here this evening'.

He said the co-existence of quantitative and qualitative issues in policy making was common to India and Greece and he was sure that both the countries in conjunction with the European Union could give a scientific outlook to policy making.

He said prosperity of nations was very important for avoiding war and conflict.

The centuries of learning from different civilsations like the Indian and Greek would be very helpful in reducing disparities, he said.

Dr Kalam said states also need to find ways and means of rooting out the fundamental causes of extremism, and also solutions for depleting sources of energy, continuously degrading environment and the scarcity of water threatening humanity.

''I believe that humanity as a whole has to work with focused national, regional and international missions which itself would be a major unifying factor and pave the way for peace and prosperity for the whole mankind.

During his address Dr Kalam delved in detail upon his vision of economic development of India.

In that context, he elaborated his concept of PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas).

Later, in his speech at a banquet hosted by President of Greece Karolos Papoulias, Dr Kalam recalled India's centuries old relations with Greece and their shared commitment to democracy and civil liberties.

He said he was extremely delighted to be in the land of 'Illiad and the Odyssey, Socrates, Homer and Plato, a land which was the cradle of democracy.

Dr Kalam said he has brought a message from his country of a billion people to Greece, which was; Nations have to work together and graduate to bring peace and prosperity not only to their own country but also to the nations around them.

He said his visit to Greece has been a very rewarding experience and the hospitality, friendship and warm sentiments of its people had made his stay memorable.

Earlier, in the day he was given a Gold Medal at the Hellinic Parliament on the its 150th Anniversary.

''I receive it as a token of the strong ties of friendship and mutual regard between our two countries,'' he said.
