Andaman to get sea water desalination plant

Port Blair, Apr 26 (UNI) Andaman and Nicobar Islands will soon get a 14 Million Litre Daily(MLD) sea water desalination plant at Port Blair.

The Governor of the archipelago has assured to consider the proposal of setting-up the desalination plant, Port Blair Municipal Council Chairman Sher Singh told newspersons here today.

The assurance came after a presentation on the proposed project was made before the Governor at Raj Niwas by Engineers India Limited, a government undertaking, which has been appointed as consultant for the study by the Port Blair Municipal Council.

The Governor has also assured to consider various schemes already conceived by the administration to construct dams and reservoirs to impound rain water, Mr Singh added.

According to sources, the Governor has referred the matter to the chief engineer, Andaman Public Works Department, for ascertaining its feasibility and setting up such smaller plants in other parts of Andaman&Nicobar Islands, so that a comprehensive proposal could be put-forth in the upcoming Island Development Authority meeting.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands are reeling under serious water crisis and monsoon is due in these islands next month.
