Three cricket bookies arrested on betting charges

Amritsar, Apr 25 (UNI) The Punjab Police unearthed three mini telephone exchanges, while smashing another betting racket involving cricket World Cup matches and arrested three bookies from the Shastri Nagar locality of the city here today.

According to the police, the three identified as Amit, Anoop and Vinod were arrested on specific information. Thirty two mobile sets and sophisticated tele communication systems were recovered from the three. In addition Rs 34,500 in cash was also recovered from them.

The police said that it was through the mini telephone exchanges that prospective 'customers' were contacted by the bookies for placing bets. Last nights bets were being placed on the semi final match involving Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

The police has registered a case and are further investigating the matter. Recently the state police had unearthed a betting racket in Barnala town.
