Quadrapulets celebrate first birthday

Chennai, Apr 25 (UNI) Aditi, Aakriti, Akshiti and Aapti, the quadruplets born to Sruthi on April 25 last year, today celebrated their first birthday at a special function organised by the team at Apollo hospitals that handled the case.

According to Consultant Pediatrician Apollo hospitals J Siyamala, Shruthi's case was unique - naturally conceived monochrorionic quadriamniotic quadruplets - which would occur one in 6,00,000 to 7,00,000 births.

Of these, identical or monozyous quadruplets are very rare in medical marvels with an average of, one in four million births, Dr Siyamala added.

Online references showed approximately only 26 sets of monozyous quadruplets throughout the world.

Talking to UNI, Ms Sruthi said ''it was a challenging task not only for me but also for the team of doctors especially during the night when I had the delivery pain''.

''Now it is fun and exciting with these kids'', she said, adding ''my mother, mother-in-law and two maids were looking after my children''.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Charumathi, who was in charge of Ms Shruthi's case said ''the dedicated team of doctors, paramedics and especially the nurses, who toiled tumultuously, night and day, in the hospital had experienced such a rare case for the first time''.

Dr Charumathi said ''their combined weight on this day last year was just 3.5 kgs''. Today each of them weighed around eight kgs and were growing and developing appropriately, she added.
