Punjab to augment 1,500 MW power from non-conventional sector

Chandigarh, Apr 25 (UNI) The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) plans to augment more than 1500 MW of power through exploitation of renewable energy sources, including small/micro hydel, biomass power projects, co-generation, waste to energy and solar thermal power generation projects.

This was disclosed by Minister for Science, Technology, Environment and Non-conventional Energy Sources Bikram Singh Majithia after visiting Solar Passive Complex of PEDA.

The Minister said that it was imperative for the government to exploit all sources of energy to come out of the power crisis being faced by the state. He said he would seek the co-operation of the concerened Union Ministry for getting funds for these projects and also invite various companies to participate in this sector.

Emphasising the need for educating the public regarding energy conservation, he asked PEDA to launch a multimedia campaign to educate the public regarding eco-friendly and energy saving technologies.

The Minister said that he would explore the possibility of having a Renewable Energy Corpus Fund created in PEDA to strengthen this sector.
