Five opposition parties demand Sikkim Guv's resignation

Gangtok, Apr 25 (UNI) Five opposition political parties of Sikkim today urged Governor V Rama Rao to resign if he fails to act on allegations levelled by them against the Sikkim Democratic Front government led by Chief Minister Pawan Chamling.

Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee president N B Bhandari, state BJP president H R Pradhan, CPI(M) state Committee secretary Balaram Adhikari, Sikkim Himali Rajya Parishad president A D Subba and Sikkim Gorkha Prajatantrik Party president G M Rai in a joint statement here said, ''the opposition parties have requested the Governor to resign on moral ground.'' The leaders said if the Governor did not concede to their demand they would soon write to the President to recall him and appoint a ''new one sensitive to the corruption and security of the state and of the nation as a whole.'' The copies of the letter would also be sent to the Prime Minister, the UPA Chairperson, the BJP president and the CPI(M) general secretary for the removal of the Governor, they said.

Among other things the opposition parties had demanded the Governor meet their members and take their views before his tour to various panchayats to take action on the BJP 's demand to limit the reservation to 50 per cent as per the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court and order a CBI inquiry into the SHRP allegations of smugling of arms and ammunition to the state.

The Governor also failed to order a CBI inquiry into the nationality of Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and to the 101 allegations and 35 scams highlighted by the Congress in its bulletin 'Congress Samachar' a few months back, the parties said.
