New Delhi, Apr 25 (UNI) Aimed at constraining the adulterated gems and jewellery market in the country, DSIIDC today opened a gem testing laboratory, enabling jewellers and end-users to get their jewellery tested at a nominal rate of Rs 225.

The state Industry Minister Mangat Ram Singhal inaugurated the laboratory at the Okhla Industrial Estate.

The Minister said, ''With an increase in the income, the buying capacity of the people has also soared. People are more into jewellery buying these days, consequently one finds local jewellery shops in every nook and corner of the city. So it becomes imperative to come up with such laboratories.'' The first-of-its-kind in north India, the laboratory will issue test reports on the lines of the global market so that the interests of the consumers and traders are safeguarded and they can guard against fake and dubious gems, said Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) Chairman and Managing Director Manoj Parida.

Established at a cost of Rs 22 lakh, the lab is fitted with state-of-the-art gem testing equipment. The certification provided through these labs will be valid across the world, Mr Parida said.

The laboratory's reports will also have several security features to prevent anyone from putting forged reports purported to be from the laboratory, he added.

Similar labs in the Jhandewalan is also in the pipeline, he further added.
