New Delhi, Apr 25 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh today in the Supreme Court vehemently opposed the ongoing construction of barrage by Maharashtra government over river Godavari.

Opening the argument before the Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan and Justices RV Raveendran and DK Jain, senior counsel K Parasaran contended that the barrage was detrimental to the interest of Andhra Pradesh.

The reservoir was constructed to meet the requirement of 0.11 tmc water for the cities of Maharashtra and now its capacity has been increased to 65 tmc water which is not required and two barrages are being further constructed which are denying Andra Pradesh its share of Godavari water, Mr Parasaran said.

Andhra Pradesh has filed a suit against the state of Maharashtra in the apex court seeking to restrain Maharashtra from constructing the barrage which will block the flow of river water to the state.

Senior counsel Harish Salve appearing for the state of Maharashtra pleaded before the court not to stop the construction which started in 2005.

The arguments will continue tommorrow.
