AP govt will construct 20 lakh houses for poor

Hyderabad, Apr 24: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today said his government would construct 20 lakh houses for the poor families under the Rajiv Gruhakalpa and INDIRAMMA housing scheme in 2007-08.

Inaugurating 'VAMBAY housing colony' constructed for the victims of the February 9, 2005 fire at Saidabad area, Dr Reddy said of the 4,600 houses allotted, construction of 792 houses were completed in the first phase. The remaining dwellings would be constructed and handed over to the beneficiaries next year.

Home Minister K Jana Reddy said the state government could not complete the construction of all allotted houses due to legal hurdles.
Nothwithstanding, the government would fulfill its promise by completing all pending house construction, he said.

Cautioning the beneficiaries against giving money to the middlemen who were collecting from them, the Home Minister said the police would take stringent action against the middlemen if any beneficiary brought the names to the notice of the police.
