Pondy: Novel agitation by fishermen in sea

Puducherry, Apr 23: Namathu Urimai Kazhagam, a fishermen organisation today resorted to a novel agitation to press for their demands.

The male members of the organisation organised a demonstration in the sea behind the Gandhi statue here while their womenfolk demonstrated on the shore. Over 50 volunteers held the demonstration in seven boats and shouted solgans in support of their demands.

They were demanding among other things, enhancement of pension from Rs 1000 to Rs 1500, enhancement of financial assistance during the period of ban on fishing and urging the government to expedite the construction of houses for the tsunami-affected fishermen.
