Srinagar, Apr 23: The breakaway Hurriyat Conference, led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, today denied reports in a section of media suggesting that militants had participated in a rally organised by the amalgam on the arrival of the ailing leader here from New Delhi following a successful kidney operation in Mumbai on March 26.

Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akbar dismissed the charges as baseless and levelled at the behest of vested interests.

''Let me tell you categorically, no militant was present in the rally. Even the police have denied this. Some people were wearing masks to avoid harassment at the hands of security forces as happens after a public meeting or a rally,'' he said.

Mr Akbar also criticised a section of media for what he called ''unbiased reporting'' and ''working at the behest of some vested interests''.
