AIDS among Burmese is on rise in Mizoram

Aizawl, Apr 23: A recent study revealed that AIDS among Burmese workers in Mizoram is on the rise and the ratio of infected HIV people at present is one in 100.

According to Mr Zau Thun, the councilor of Samaritan Society, which working on AIDS programme in Mizoram, the traders weavers and daily workers are found worst affected.

"We have no right to talk about the exact number of AIDS patients but can only say that the number of HIV positive people among the Burmese society are increasing", he said.

About 10 Burmese workers have died of AIDS in Mizoram since 1996, he pointed out adding that in 2006 the society tested the blood of 30,000 people in Mizoram and about 2000 samples were found HIV positive.
