Srinagar, Apr 22 (UNI) Breakaway Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani received a tumultuous welcome today on his arrival here from New Delhi where he was recuperating following his kidney surgery at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital in Mumbai on March 26.

Hundreds and thousands of supporters had gathered at the Srinagar airport this morning to receive the ailing leader.

The supporters erupted in slogans as soon as the aircraft carrying the firebrand leader touched the ground at the Srinagar airport this afternoon.

And when Mr Geelani came out of the airport building, he was presented with garlands and bouquets by his supporters and well-wishers.

The Hurriyat chairman was then taken in a motorcade of hundreds of vehicles to Eidgah where he paid homage to those killed since the onset of violence in Kashmir in 1989.

Mr Geelani later addressed a mammoth gathering at Eidgah grounds.

Cries of 'Allaho Akbar (God is Great)', pro-Geelani, pro-independence and anti-US slogans rent the air during his nearly one hour speech.

During his speech, the ailing leader thanked the team of medicos, led by Dr Hemant B Tondgaonkar, for performing a successful surgery on his only kidney, diagnosed as malignant.

Mr Geelani also thanked Dr Sameer Kaul of Apollo hospital for his suggestions to go for immediate surgical attention.

Visibly tired and looking pale after the surgery, this health condition, however, did not deter Mr Geelani from delivering a fiery speech as usual.

Throughout the address, he was heard asking his supporters to be disciplined.
