Geelani escapes unhurt as dais caves in

Srinagar, Apr 22 (UNI) Breakaway Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani today escaped unhurt after the dais at a public rally gave way under the weight of jostling supporters here today.

Immediately after Mr Geelani's address to a mammoth gathering at Eidgah here, a large number of his supporters rushed to the dais to seek the ailing leader's blessings and shake hands with him.

The rostrum caved in under the weight of the jostling supporters.

However, Mr Geelani escaped unhurt in the melee.

Several supporters of the firebrand leader were reportedly wounded in the collapse and the stampede that followed.

Mr Geelani returned here this afternoon from New Delhi where he was recuperating following his kidney surgery at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital in Mumbai on March 26.
