Thane, Apr 22 (UNI) A ride in a CNG auto-rickshaw in Thane and Bhyander just got dearer as commuters will have to shell out a rupee more.

The decision to hike price was approved by the Regional Transport Authorities (RTA) last evening here.

Following numerous representations by the union members and after a thorough study of the situation, RTA finally decided to grant uniform rates for CNG, Perol and LPG rickshaws with immediate effect.

The fare hike will bring relief to scores of rickshaw-drivers, who have been demanding a rise in the auto fare. They had gone on a strike twice to press their demands under the leadership of Union leader Sharad Rao.

The reasons cited for their demand to increase the fare included shortage of CNG pumps, frequent power cuts that affected the functioning of CNG pumps, hike in insurance premium and interest rates on loans and also maintenance cost.

Now the minimum fare will be Rs 10 and the fare will increase by Rs 5.50 every km.

Earlier the fare for CNG rickshaws was Rs 9 and for Petrol-driven autos it was Rs 11.50, which has been brought down by Rs 1.50 to maintain uniformity.
