All RTOs to be interlinked in the country: Baalu
New Delhi, Apr 22: The Government will integrate, first at state and then at national level, all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) for bringing in benefits of integrated network of transport- related data base, said Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T R Baalu today. According to an official release, Mr Baalu emphasised that there were immense benefits of integrated network and data-base relating to driving licences, registration certificates and national permits as it would help enhance revenue of the states.
Speaking at the first-ever seminar on road safety for the states and the Union Territories at Coimbatore, he said e-governance in the transport sector would improve safety as the integration of data will check the issuance of more than one driving licences or fake licences.
Mr Baalu said his ministry has identified certain steps to improve road safety, convenience and comfort of the road users.
He said efforts were being made to introduce Information and Technology in the road transport sector. These includes computerisation of existing records of driving licences and registration certificates and issuance of smart card based driving licences and registration certificates.
He said standardised uniform software had already been develped and given to all the states for computerising the records.
