Silvassa, Apr 21: An extensive census of wildlife will be carried out from May 1 to 4 by the Forest Department of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, forest department officials said.

According to Deputy Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), here, Dr Tejaswini Patil, forest officials, with the help of volunteers, will carry out a census for four days to estimate the wildlife growth trend, development and sustenance patterns in and around the forests.

The 65 waterholes that existed in 2001-02 have reduced to 55 at present. Therefore, this time, census will be carried out at 55 census points near waterholes in different locations of the Union Territory.

For the wildlife census 2007, the forest staff has been briefed in detail about methodology of census, direct and indirect method of sighting, taking leopard pugmark impressions, and identification of birds, reptiles and mammals, Dr Patil said.

At each waterhole point, one forest guard with three persons to assist him for the census work with necessary items will be stationed, she said.

The department has also contacted volunteers and NGOs who have interest and knowledge about wildlife census for their advice and assistance, Dr Patil said.
