Vice-President calls for awareness to check cancer

Patna, Apr 21 (UNI) Concerned over the rising cases of cancer, Vice President Bhairon Singh Sekhawat today called for promoting awareness among people to prevent the 'deadly disease'.

While inaugurating a 'Prevention of Cancer' unit in Mahavir Cancer Institute (MCI) here, Mr Shekhawat said over 20 lakh people in the country were suffering from the disease.

Highlighting the importance of prevention of the disease, he said people were still unaware of cause and prevention of the disease.

He further suggested the Oncologists to sensitise people about the early diagnosis and other preventive measures of cancer.

The doctors should instill confidence among the patients about the cure of cancer and apprise them about the cause behind its spread.

Mr Shekhawat said about 26 crore people living Below Poverty Line (BPL) were unaware of the treatment facilities at various cancer hospitals.

Offering his cooperation towards helping those affected with the 'dreaded disease', Mr Shekhawat suggested the MCI administration to publish fact sheets about the number of patients being admitted, the cure rate and feelings of those who were cured to generate confidence among the people.

'' Such steps would pave the way for automatic inflow of donations to the hospitals fighting against the disease,'' Mr Shekhawat added.

The Vice president also opined that ''population control'' was essential to prevent not only the spread of cancer and but other diseases also.
