Union Government to hand over 38 Coal Blocks within 2-3 months

Kolkata, Apr 20 (UNI) The Centre will hand over 38 coal blocks with reserves of four billion tonnes within two-three months to various Public Sector undertakings and Private Companies.

Speaking on the sidelines of a seminar organised by Coal India Limited(CIL) Coal Secretary H C Gupta here today said "We have received 1400 applications and till December and the Screening Committee in consultation with the government has selected the Public and Private players." In 2006-07 the ministry has handed over 130 blocks with reserves of 27 billion tonnes. "We are strengthening DGMC, the regulatory body which governs the coal Industry, as in future many more coal blocks will be distributed," Mr Gupta said.

Speaking on the Shankar Committee report, which will provide a road map for CIL to give it a face lift and do necessary revamping, would be released within 2-3 months.

"The report aims to make CIL an International standard Company with focus on health safety and economic aspects as well," Gupta said.

He also mentioned that all the Public Sector Undertakings including CIL and Public Sector Cos have earmarked a seperate fund for safety management.
