SC tells UP Government to obey orders
New Delhi, Apr 20 (UNI) The Supreme Court today pulled up the Uttar Pradesh government for not complying with its orders passed over two decades ago for handing over plots in Varanasi to Shias which are being used as grave yards.
Petitioners Gulam Abbas and other Shias have filed interlocutory applications in writ petitions pending since 1978 for seeking directions to the state government to get the land vacated which is in illegal possession of Sunni sect of Muslims.
The state government today took the stand use of force may create law and order problem in the state.
Sunni sect has some mazars on the disputed land and have refused to hand over the possession to Shias.
A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices P K Balasubramanyan and R V Raveendran , however, took exception to the plea raised by the state government and told its counsel that the orders of this court have to be complied with.
The court however adjourned the hearing of the case till after summer vacations in view of the ongoing assembly elections in the state as it does not want to create any problems for the authorities during polls.
