PCI seeks ban on exit and opinion polls

New Delhi, Apr 20 (UNI) The Press Council of India (PCI) today contended before the Supreme Court that it was in favour of banning the telecast of opinion and exit polls during elections as they affect the election result.

Mr P H Parikh, appearing for PCI, told the bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, Justices P K Balasubramaniyan and R V Ravindran that the PCI had already laid down guidelines but these are not enforceable under the law.

The apex court adjourned the hearing of the PIL filed by Mr D K Thakur seeking ban on exit and opinion polls as such opinion polls influence the minds of the voters and definitely have an effect on the outcome of election.
