Khongjom Day to be celebrated in Manipur

Imphal, April 20 (UNI) 'Khongjom day' will be observed in Manipur on April 23, 2007 at Khongjom, Thoubal district, to pay tribute to those killed during the Anglo-Manipur war of 1891.

Manipur, which was then a princely state, lost independence in 1891 after the British waged war against Manipur in 1891.

The Battle of Khongjom is remembered by historians as one of the greatest and decisive battles as the entire Manipur force fought till the last man.

The celebrations will last the whole day and Governor S S Sidhu and Chief Minister Ibobi Singh will lead the state in offering tributes to the martyrs.

All arrangements have been made for observation of the day at Thoubal district, officials added.
