New Delhi, Apr 20 (UNI) The Supreme Court today granted one more week to the state of Gujarat to file its action taken report in cases of fake encounters staged by the state police.

A bench comprising Justices C K Thakker and Tarun Chatterjee acceded to the request of the counsel for the state government for more time and adjourned the hearing till April 27.

Petitioner Rubbabudin Sheikh in his petition had sought directions to the state government to produce his sister-in-law who is missing for over two years.

Narendra Modi government during last hearing had for the first time admitted that the brother of the petitioner had been killed in a fake encounter and the state was contemplating action against senior police officers including some IPS officers.

The government today sought more time on the grounds that the inquiry was in final stages and the action is going to be taken soon against the guilty police officers.

Following 2002 communal riots which had rocked the state in the aftermath of Godhra train burning incident there have been reports that state police officers were involved in fake encounters to earn promotions and get police medals.
