Coast Guard discusses effective safety for small fishing craft

Mumbai, Apr 20 (UNI) Director General of Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Vice Admiral R F Contractor today chaired the sixth meeting of the National Maritime Search and Rescue Board to discuss various issues related to search and rescue operations by Coast Guard at sea.

The meeting focussed on working out a cost effective and viable safety mechanism for small fishing craft and addressed issues related to the lack of basic life-saving and communication equipment onboard these crafts.

The progress on the development of low-cost emergency transmitter for fishing boats by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was also analysed.

On the occasion, the Indian Coast Guard-SAR awards were given to Merchant Vehicle (MV) CMA CGM Rossini and ICGS Savitri Bai Phule, a Ministry of Defence release said here today.
