Vijaya Shanthi to appear before court on May 10

Chennai, Apr 19 (UNI) The Economic Offences Wing-II (EOW-II) Court today ordered popular film star Vijay Shanthi to appear before the court on May ten in connection with Income Tax returns cases.

When the IT returns cases came up for hearing before EOW-II court Judge T Ravindran, Public Prosecutor Ramasamy submitted that the court had earlier in March ordered issuance of summons to Vijay Shanthi for her appearance before the court today.

Having received the summons, she ought to have appeared before court. But she failed to do so, he submitted.

On behalf of Vijay Shanthi, a petition under Section 317 of CrPC was filed, seeking to dispense with her personal appearance for the day before the court, on the ground that she was indisposed.

Allowing the petition, the Judge directed Vijay Shanthi to appear before the court in person on May ten.

The Income Tax Department filed cases against Vijay Shanthi for her alleged wilful failure to file income tax returns within the due date for the assessment year 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1994-95.
