Mexican national further remanded in judicial custody

Barrackpore, Apr 19 (UNI) Mexican national Febles Ortiz Eduardo Antonio (47), arrested from an Indian Airlines flight en route to Delhi on March 21 last was further remanded in judicial custody today.

The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate here announced the ruling on grounds that no bail petition had been moved on behalf of the accused.

Antonio was produced before the ACJM Gopal Chandra Karmakar, while the latter remanded him to jail custody till May 3 next, defense lawyer Krishnendu Sarkar said.

He said no bail petition was filed today on behalf of the accused as neither the Mexican embassy in the capital nor any relation of the accused instructed him to do so.

Earlier, on April 11, the embassy engaged a senior lawyer of Supreme Court to plea for his bail which the ACJM in-charge denied extending the remand till April 19, Mr Sarkar added.

Antonio was prosecuted under section 3 (d) (a) of the Suppression of Unlawful Activities against Safety of Civil Aviation Act and a few other sections of the IPC as the Captain of the Bangkok-Delhi flight IC-854 handed him over to the police at the NSCBI Airport after an emergency landing.

The accused, who was in a drunken condition had allegedly threatened a co-passenger Rakesh Kumar Tulsyan to blow up the aircraft, Captain S.S.Kohli said.
