Bandh call to press for medical college

Baripada, Apr 19 (UNI) The ''Bhanja Sena'', a Mayurbhanj-based outfit, has given a 24-hour-long ''Baripada Bandh'' call on May three to press its demand for the establishment of medical college here.

The outfit had been spearheading for sometimes past to voice the demand for establishment of a government medical college at Baripada. The ''Bhanja Sena'' today staged a dharna, supported by all political parties, near the main entrance gate of the Mayurbhanj District Collector's office for setting up a medical college.

District Bar Association president Bijan Das, Baripada Municipality chairman Krushnananda Mohanty, former MLA Chhatish Chandra Dhal and Biju Yuva Janata Dal president Raghunath Mohanty addressed a street-corner meeting and joined the chorus for a government medical college.

They claimed that the existing well-equipped district headquarter government hospital and the Regional Diagnostic Centre would make Baripada ideally suited for the establishment of a government medical college.

This apart, the vast stretches of land and building of the of the on-going multi-crore inter-state Subarnarekha Irrigation Project at Luxmiposi will be available soon for the establishment of the medical college.

In a memorandum, addressed to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, they argued that due to its locational advantage, the proposed government medical college at Baripada would provide stable and stronger health facilities to the adjoining border villages of Jharkhand and West Bengal besides being a great boon to the tribals of Mayurbhanj district.
