New Delhi, Apr 18: Seeking to further bolster developing Indo-US naval cooperation, US Navy's Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Michael Mullen today renewed America's commitment to provide all assistance for building a stronger Indian Navy.

''We started with exchange of officers in War Colleges to learn about each other and now training was being imparted to personnel and equipment transferred,'' he said after meeting senior Indian Naval officers here.

USS Trenton was being handed over to India and so were Indian naval pilots being trained in 'tail hook' landing, he said, adding that talks were on about future fighter/attack aircraft and other defence equipment.

There was not only cooperation between the navies but also support from the governments, Admiral Mullen said.

''The US is willing to provide any further assistance required.'' Joint exercises between the navies were being conducted to have a better understanding of each other, especially the young officers, and exchange 'unclassified' information, he said.

''We share a very strong relationship that is very important for the long-term security and economic well-being of the region.'' Talking about his '1000-ship navy' concept, he said it was a global/regional partnership between navies on a voluntary basis for fighting piracy, slavery, illegal drug and weapons trade, undertaking humanitarian relief operation and ensuring peace, safety and order.

Examples of this 'free forum force' were seen during relief operations in tsunami-hit countries, Lebanon and Katrina, he added.

Admiral Mullen also informed that Automatic Identification System (AIS) for all vessels with more than 300 tonne displacement was in the process of being implemented in the International Waters on the lines of the international aviation sector.
