Textile clusters to be set up in TN
Tiruchirapalli, Apr 18 (UNI) The Union Textiles Ministry is in the process of setting up Textile Clusters and Common Facility Centres (CFC) in important locations in Tamil Nadu Talking to newsmen here, Textiles Committee Quality Assurance Officer and Cluster Development Agent G Ramesh Babu said of the 20 clusters planned in the country, three would be located in Tamil Nadu.
The Handlooms Development Commissioner had undertaken feasibility studies for setting up CFCs mooted under the Integrated Handloom Cluster Development Programme.
The committee had planned full-fledged centres with advanced machinery and equipment for several activities such as warping, sizing, designing and quality analysis laboratory for the benefit of cotton-based primary cooperative weaving societies in various pockets including Kurinjipadi in Cuddalore and Tiruvannamalai and Tiruchirapalli.
The primary objective of the cluster project was to create awareness among weavers and others about the latest designs and technology.
A consortia comprising master weavers and senior artisans was formed in the textile villages to impart junior weaving community the requisite training on relevant topics of specialisation.
As a pilot initiative, a textiles consortia had been already formed at Manamedu in Musiri Taluk in Tiruchirapalli District where heritage textile practices of producing cotton sarees were on for the past several decades, he said.
The Textiles Committee comes under the Union Ministry of Textiles.
