Rickshaw pullers piqued with Municipal tax policies

Imphal, April 18 (UNI) The rickshaw pullers here have expressed dissatisfaction over frequent hike in tax by the Imphal Municipal Council(IMC).

The All Manipur Rickshaw Drivers and Pullers Welfare Association has decided, in a meeting held yesterday, not to pay the tax, demanding a review in the IMC policy.

The meeting was chaired by union president Md Kayamuddin and it was decided to demand fixation of tax as it was before March 31, 2006.

Members said until March 2006, the tax was below Rs 85 for registration, renewal, issuance of driving license. However in October last year, the taxes were almost doubled.

Gen Secy of the association A K Kom said the rickshaw-pullers were poor people who earned their livelihood on daily basis.

He urged the IMC to review the decision and to fix affordable tax and to simply the rules.
