Over 700 illegal huts razed in Goregaon

Mumbai, Apr 18 (UNI) Over 700 illegal huts were demolished by the Brihmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at Naya Nagar in Goregaon here today.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner (AMC) Babasaheb Pawar told UNI over the phone that there were around 1200 illegal huts on the private land, of which 700 were demolished today.

Mr Pawar said the civic body had carried out demolitions five times earlier -- in 1995, 1996, 1998, 2001 and 2005. However, encroachers would rebuild the hutments after each demolition drive.

The land is a private property. The civic body intervened as the owners had failed to take action against the encroachers, Mr Pawar said adding that the BMC will initiate action against thirteen persons, including a developer, under the MRTP (Molopoly and Restricted Trade Practices) Act.
