Naxal chief of UP killed, Ak 47 seized

Varanasi, Apr 18 (UNI) In a major pre-election success against naxals in neighbouring Chandauli district, police this evening gunned down chief of naxal extremists in Uttar Pradesh, Sanjay Kol, who was carrying a bounty of Rs One lakh on his head.

Police Superintendent (Chandauli) Pravin Kuamr said here that Sanjay Kol, CPI (Maoists) commander of three naxal infested districts -- Chandauli, Mirzapur and Sonebhadra, was gunned down by police in the Hathiyani village under Chandauli Kotwali police station.

An Ak-47, grenade, magazine and anti-election and naxal literature were seized from the spot. An accomplice of Kol, however, managed to escape.

The slain extremist was wanted in connection with at least 50 cases and was the prime accused of 2004 landmine blast in Hinauta (Naugarh) also in Chandauli, which claimed the lives of 13 police and PAC personnel.

The father of the slain naxalite Dashrath Kol is contesting assembly elections from Robertsganj (Reserved) seat of neighbouring Sonebhadra district.
