New Delhi, Apr 17 (UNI) A delegation of teachers from the University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) today called on President A P J Abdul Kalam and urged him to retain the college under the jurisdiction of the Delhi University to ''save the institution from collapse''.

''Unless the teaching Hospital of UCMS is retained under the University of Delhi, the future of such an excellent medical college, the only medical college managed by the University of Delhi, will be in jeopardy,'' Democratic Teachers' Front president Meena Gupta said.

The delegation, accompanied by senior Left leader Sitaram Yechury and former DUTA president Dr Vijender Sharma, apprised Dr Kalam, the Visitor of the University, about the confusion if the teaching hospital of UCMS and the GTB Hospital, is taken over the Delhi Government.

Ms Gupta said Dr Kalam had assured the delegation that he would work toward a positive resolution of the issue in the interest of academics.

The delegation also drew the President's attention to the academic uncertainty emanating from the move to take away the college from the jurisdiction of the University of Delhi.

The delegation also comprised Prof U K Srivastav, Prof A K Jain, Prof Sudhir Kumar, Prof S Sarkar and Prof Sanjay Gupta.
