Mumbai, Apr 17 (UNI) A special ACB court today sentenced a suspended police inspector, who had been held under corruption charges five years back, to seven years rigorous imprisonment.

The court also sentenced a suspended constable, held in the same case, to a year's rigorous imprisonment.

Additional sessions judge D B Poojari also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 upon Jagannath Jadhav, the suspended police inspector, and a fine of Rs 5000 upon Arun Baban Jagdhane, the suspended constable.

According to the facts of the case, the two policemen had picked up Mohammed Nabi Ahmed Nabi Qureshi from the house of the latter's sister-in-law Ruksana Banu Ali Ahmed Qureshi for questioning in a robbery case. The incident had occurred on the evening of February 7, 2002.

Mohammed Nabi Ahmed Nabi Qureshi was detained till February 10 of the same year without producing him before the court. Ruksana, therefore, visited the Vashi Railway Police Station, to which the two policemen were attached, and inquired about her brother-in-law.

Jadhav, then, had demanded Rs one lakh to release her brother-in-law. Ruksana agreed to pay the amount but, at the same time, lodged a complaint with the anti corruption bureau whose sleuths laid a trap and nabbed the two policemen.
