Chennai, Apr 17: Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) President Ashok Singhal today warned of an uprising in the country if the UPA government at the Centre went ahead with the Sethu Samudram Channel Project (SSCP), destroying the Ramar Sethu.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Singhal said the razing of the Ramar Sethu for the SSCP would hurt the sentiments of the Hindus and claimed it would result in an uprising in the country.

He demanded that the 'Rama Sethu', also known as Adam's bridge, be conferred with the status of an ancient monument and archaeological site under Section 4(1) of the Ancient Monuments and Archeological Sites and Remains Act, 1959.

He alleged that UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi had surrendered the sovereignity of the nation to United States, which wants to jeopardise India's rich thorium reserve at the 'Rama Sethu'.

''Sonia went ahead with the project so fast without even consulting the expert team. She ignored the historical and religious importance of 'Ram Sethu', the sentiments of the people, and the alternative method suggested for a shorter sea route that bypasses Rama Sethu,'' he said.

''We are not against the SSCP, but we want the government to realign the channel. The UPA government had opted for this channel, only to remove the existence of Lord Rama and his importance to the country from the annals of the Indian history,'' he alleged.
