Lanka says Tiger training base destroyed in air raid

Colombo, Apr 17 (UNI) Sri Lanka's Defence Ministry claimed here today that its supersonic fighter jets have bombed and destroyed "an identified LTTE training facility" at Wattappalai, south of Puthukkudiyiruppu in Mullaitivu.

The Defence Ministry in a statement said that the aerial sorties were taken on a pre-identified LTTE target, adding that the rebel training facilities were destroyed during the attack.

According to Air Force officials, air visuals obtained from the attack site confirmed simultaneous explosions occurring from the identified LTTE training base, the statement said, adding that Tiger communication net work in the area was cut-off due to the raid.

Defence sources said that the LTTE Vanni leadership has maintained a static silence over the attack, which might have inflicted greater losses to the outfit than expected.

There was no immediate reaction from the LTTE regarding this air raid so far.
