Govt sanctions for technology park in Madurai: Karunanidhi

Chennai, Apr 17 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today told the state assembly that the government has given administrative sanction for building an Information Technology park at Madurai as part of its policy to take IT to tier two cities.

Replying to N Nanmaran (CPI-M), during the question hour, the Chief Minsiter said after completing some basic works, he would lay the foundation stone for the one million sq ft park in the temple town on the lines of Tidel park in the city.

Answering supplementaries, Mr Karunanidhi said after Chennai, IT parks were being set up in Coimbatore and Madurai and other tier two cities like Salem. He said there won't be a park in Tiruvarur, because the district lacked basic infrastructural facilities required for IT parks.

Mr Karunanidhi said the government was providing concessions to companies, which evinced interest in building such parks and that was one of the reasons as why the companies were coming forward to set up IT parks in the state. All works were almost completed for the setting up of second Tidel park in the city, he added.

To a question on investments attracted by the DMK government after it came to power in May last, he said in the last ten months, the government had signed nine MoUs for a total investment of Rs 8,485 crore. This would provide direct employment to 57,210 and indirect employment to 64,330 people, he added.

The Chief Minister said the government signed the MoUs on the condition that the companies should provide employment to the local people and these companies sign the agreements after agreeing to the condition.
