Jaipur, Apr 16 (UNI) The state capital's one of the most important historical landmarks, Albert Hall museum, will be closed down for a year from today for renovation work.

Following its closure, lakhs of tourists would not be able to view the Egyptian mummy, which has been one of its major attractions.

Sources say at least six lakh tourists visited the Albert Hall last year.

Albert Hall officials say constant tourist traffic hampers renovation works and that is why the decision was taken to close down the museum for a year.

However, tourists are disappointed as they would not be able to view the rare collection it displays.

Albert Hall, located in Ram Niwas Garden, has been modelled on the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and is an example of Indo-Saracenic style of architecture.

The hall was named after Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria's husband. Albert's son, the Prince of Wales, laid the foundation stone in 1876. It was designed by Colonel Samuel Swinton Jacob.

Albert Hall, converted into central museum, displays Rajasthani art and culture and also houses exquisite collection of metalware, decorative wares, miniature portraits, paintings, sculptures, Persian carpets.

It displays the Rajasthani village life through costume, pottery, brasswares and wood work.
