Rains take a toll on rubber plantations
Udupi, Karnataka, Apr 16 (UNI) Rains, coupled with gusty winds on April 14, have caused extensive damage to rubber plantations at Jadkal in Kundapura taluk of Udupi district, while the condition of one more person was still serious.
Addressing newspersons here today, Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj said two persons, including a woman, have been killed in rain-related incidents in the district. The condition of a person, on whom a tree fell down while he was riding a two-wheeler at Judkal, was still serious. Compensation to the next of kin of the victims would be given soon, he added.
He said about 5,000 rubber trees have been totally destroyed in Jadkal alone, the worst hit by the heavy winds. About 30 to 40 houses in the district have been partially damaged and five houses have collapsed, besides several trees being uprooted.
However, the total loss was yet to be ascertained, he added.
