Barasat, Apr 16 (UNI) A large number of villagers, including women, today staged protest against transfer of a Block Development Officer of Deganga Block by the District authorities alleging that the present incumbent Matindranath Debnath has been victimized by the higher authorities.

The villagers demonstrated in front of the Block and Panchayat Samity Office near Berachampa under Deganga police station this afternoon and staged blockade on the state highway linking the international corridor at Ghoza danga and other bordering areas of North 24 Parganas forcing a huge traffic out of gear for about one and a half hours.

Meanwhile, a group of hooligans attacked the demonstrators despite police intervention to remove the blockade. They also manhandled the women, the demonstrators alleged.

Incidentally, some demonstrators chasing the attackers caught one and handed over him to the police who was later taken into custody, police said.

The BDO was transferred as he had written letters to the Panchayat Samity chief on the advice of the higher authorities to maintain status of the 1734.66 acres of land in different mouzas of Deganga Blocks which were earlier earmarked for industrialization.
