Court orders to frame charges against police constable
New Delhi, Apr 17 (UNI) Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjeev Jain ordered for charges to be framed against Delhi police head constable Jarnail Singh for allegedly duping a Gujarat based diamond merchant of diamonds worth Rs 17 lakh on April 9 2003.
The court denied a petition filed by the police pleading for the constable to be discharged. The police claimed the accused had been posted at former Union Minister and JD (U) leader George Fernandes' residence on the fateful day and itis impossible for him to be present at two places at the same time.
The court, however, refused to the buy this version of the story, summoning the constable before it.
According to prosecution, the constable, Jarnail Singh was posted at Ajmeri Gate where diamond merchant Arvind Patel alighted from a train, carrying some diamonds. Singh told him that the bag might be containing a bomb and therefore, needed to be checked. He then took Arvind to the police station in an autorikshaw.
When the autorikshaw approached the Ajmeri police station, Singh got down on the pretext of showing the diamond box to his senior police officers to never return.
On a complaint filed by an unsuspecting Arvind, the police helped him get a sketch of the accused prepared. The skecth was found matching with the head constable.
Charges have been framed against Singh under Section 420 of IPC.
