Bangalore, Apr 15: Poor people belonging to the SC/ST and OBC communities, especially those living in villages, require reservations more than those who have already progressed in life, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy says.

Leave reservation facilities for the needy, said Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy in his appeal to people who have progressed in life by availing themselves of the benefits of reservation.

Inaugurating the 116th birth anniversary celebrations of Dr B R Ambedkar in the City, Mr Kumaraswamy said, poor people belonging to the SC/ST and OBC communities, especially those living in villages, require reservations more than those who have already progressed in life.

The Chief Minister said benefits of reservation will not reach the rural masses if the process becomes merely job-oriented. He was responding to slogans raised by some youths calling for filling up of backlog vacancies, during the Chief Minister's address.

"Nothing will happen by shouting. Express your feelings in a peaceful manner without hurting sentiments of any caste or community" he urged the youth.

Mr Kumaraswamy again turned his attention towards ministers, bureaucrats, ministers and other elected representatives, stating that officials, despite frequent appeal, were unable to make an honest effort to understand problems faced by the rural masses. "It is unfortunate that we respond only when people living in cities and those representing the industrial class, especially the IT sector, complain. We invite them with red carpets to Vidhana Soudha to discuss their problems. But the poor villagers are stopped at the entrance by the police and their appeals do not get proper attention," he said. He said ministers and elected representatives too are responsible for this.

As many as 12 persons who have worked for the cause of Dalits from various walks of life, were conferred with the Dr B R Ambedkar award on the occasion. They are: Dr Kamala Hampana, Mudukavva Pujari, late Chandraprasad Tyagi, D G Sagar, Madhav Revankar, Siddaraju, Jagadish, Shinde Bhimarao, M Nagaraj, H R Swamy, H Manchaiah and S R Krishnappa. Dr K V Kishore Murthy of Nimhans was conferred a special award for treating over 4,000 destitutes free of cost of various types of mental illness.
