K'taka Council adopts resolution on OBC quota
Bangalore, Apr 14: In one of the longest day sessions held, Karnataka Legislative Council today passed an unanimous resolution supporting the Centre's move to provide 27 per cent reservation to Other Backward Communities in institutes of higher learning.
The House which began the last day's proceeeding at 1030 hrs yesterday wrapped up at 0300 hrs this morning before adjourning sine die.
Members of the upper house burnt the midnight oil to complete the agenda and various issues pending before the house.
The resolution on reservation to OBCs was moved by Leader of the House and Higher Education Minister D H Shankaramurthy, and seconded by leader of the Opposition H K Patil. A similar resolution had earlier been adopted by the State Assebly.
Welcoming the move, Mr patil urged the State to take the initiative to fill the vacancies of Chairman and members of the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission. The vacancies had not been filled for more than a year he said.
Mr Shankara Murthy who moved the resolution said Karnataka stood as a role model in the country in recognising the need to provide special assistance to weaker sections in the society.
Congress members V R Sudarshan, V S Ugrappa, Dr L Hanumanthaiah, Prakash Rathod, Smt Umashree, BJP's Veeraiah Swamy, JD(S) members C H Neeravari, Y S V Dutta, Sri Kantegowda also participated in the discussion.
Chairman B K Chandrashekhar put the resolution for vote which was unanimously adopted.
Earlier the house had passed six different bills including Karnataka Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill 2007, which were passed by the lower house.
Mr Chandrashekhar later adjourned the House sine die.
