K'taka Assembly passes resolution on OBC quota
Bangalore,
Apr
10:
The
Karnataka
Legislative
Assembly
today
unanimously
passed
a
resolution
by
voice
vote
to
pledge
the
state
Government's
support
to
the
Centre
in
its
efforts
to
provide
27
per
cent
reservation
for
Other
Backward
Classes.
Moving
the
resolution,
Chief
Minister
H
D
Kumaraswamy
traced
the
state's
efforts
in
taking
progressive
decisions
to
uplift
people
from
the
backward
classes.
He
recalled
the
yeoman
service
rendered
by
late
Chief
Minister
D
Devaraj
Urs,
who
had
set
a
model
for
the
rest
of
the
country.
Supporting
the
resolution,
Leader
of
the
Opposition
N
Dharam
Singh
urged
the
Government
to
set
up
a
permanent
backward
classes
commission
for
the
welfare
of
the
people
belonging
to
the
category.
Former
Deputy
Chief
Minister
Siddaramaiah,
who
also
spoke,
regretted
that
the
country
had
not
implemented
the
Constitutional
benefits
to
the
OBCs
in
true
spirit
after
independence,
thereby
causing
setback
to
social
justice.
The
Centre
should
make
efforts
to
get
the
stay
granted
by
the
Supreme
Court
on
the
reservation
vacated
to
help
the
OBCs,
he
felt,
adding
that
the
state
could
observe
a
bandh,
if
need
be,
to
press
for
reservation.
Ministers
K
S
Eshwarappa
and
D
T
Jayakumar
also
supported
the
resolution.
Mr
Jayakumar
backed
Mr
Siddaramaiah's
suggestion
to
observe
a
state
bandh.
The
resolution
stated
that
the
state
would
support
the
Centre
in
its
attempt
to
provide
27
per
cent
reservation
for
OBC
category
people
in
higher
educational
institutions
such
as
Indian
Institutes
of
Management
and
Indian
Institutes
of
Technology.
