Teacher Suicide: Committee formed to study SDMCs functioning
Bangalore, Apr 14 (UNI) Karnataka Legislative Council has formed a Seven-Member Committee to study functioning of School Development Committees (SDMCs) following a teacher committing suicide recently in Venkatapura Village in Gadag District, due to harassment by a SDMC member.
Council Chairman Prof B K Chandrashekhar announced in the House yesterday that the Committee headed by Dr L Hanumanthaiah(Congress), besides studying the functioning of the SDMCs in the State their relevance to continue would also be looked into. Other members of the committee includes S M Anand (Cong), Dr M P Nada Gouda (JD-U), Vimala Gowda and Shobha Karandlaje (both BJP) and Mari Thibbegowda (Ind). The Committee has been asked to submit its report within one month.
It may be recalled here that a lady teacher Prema had set herself ablaze after unable to sustain the continued harassment from a SDMC member. The deceased also left behind s suicide note explaining reasons which forced her to take the extreme step in life and sought measures to curb menace of the harassment by the SDMC Chairman and Members.
